We are in the home stretch. As I sit here looking at full duffel bags and crisp uniforms the butter flies are zooming!
We are ready for the adventure... All the work, all the meetings, it all comes together tomorrow morning!

Here is the RECOMMENDED PACKING list: First here is the "Official Jamboree Uniform" (we have discussed this at length over the last year.

Scouts and Leaders

Official national jamboree uniform:

Jamboree neckerchief (one will be given to you when you arrive at the jamboree)

The activities uniform for youth and leaders will be a jamboree T-shirt, Scout shorts, Scout socks, and Troop Hat.

While aboard planes, trains, buses, or autos en route, youth and leaders must wear the official Scout uniform.

THE GEAR IS GONE!!!!!
We have passed through what I have considered one of the most import gateways of the Jamboree process, the loading of the gear.
2 years ago we circled today's date on the calendar and as we loaded the last box in the trailer today.. it was a great feeling to know that we are almost there.. JAMBOREE is literally just around the corner.
As you read on, I am posting information from the National Jamboree site...
The Meeting Thursday.
The place is Washington Park, shelter "D". It is important if you have not already done so, to RSVP. We need to know how much food to buy.
We will start at 6:00 PM. You do not need to wear your uniform, it is a casual event. Casual but you need to be there. There will be information and details that I will sharing with the Troop and families.

Mail to the Jamboree

For efficient postal service to the jamboree, letters and packages must be addressed in this manner:

All incoming mail will be handled through the regular camp-wide Jamboree Postal Service. Packages to individuals will not be accepted on a collect (cash-on-delivery) basis; they must be sent prepaid to the jamboree. Due to base security, packages sent by other carriers (i.e. UPS, FedEx, etc) will not be delivered to the sub camp by those carriers and will need to be X-rayed off site. Once cleared, those packages will be turned over to the Jamboree Postal Service for delivery. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use the U.S. Postal Service for packages. Mail for each sub camp will be handled by a sub camp postmaster, and each jamboree troop leader will assign an adult leader within his troop to serve as troop postmaster.

CELL PHONES
As we have covered in the past, I am not opposed to cell phones and using them while at the National Jamboree. There will be times and places that I will not allow the Scouts to use them, they will be notified in advance and there will be an opportunity to secure them if need be. If the phone becomes such a distraction that it warrants my attention.. I will secure the phone and the Scout will loose the privilege.
I would encourage parents to have a talk about cell phone use and when calls to home will be made. If you anticipate your Scout having some homesickness, discuss this and encourage him to first talk to me while we are gone, we will work through the issue.

VISITING
If you are planning on paying a visit to the National Jamboree, make sure that you check all the visitor information and plan ahead. Visitor times are:

Remember that at no time are allowed to remove your Scout from the property or disrupt any Troop or Jamboree activity. If you are planning on being the in the Washington D.C. area while we are on tour, the same rule applies, please honor the Council and the BSA's rule on custody and responsibility of the Troop leadership.
We will talk about the itinerary of the tours and more flight information at the meeting on Thursday.

Rose Parade!

Last year we had a uniquie opportunity to march in the Rose Parade. It was a Historic event and one that I will not soon forget.
This year our Jamboree contingent will once again march in the Parade. A year ago, we were all just a bunch of Scouts and Scouters going to Jamboree.. this year we are Troop 720! And we will be marching together as a Troop.
So here are the details.
We are going to meet at the far East side of the Llyod center by Sears at 8:00 AM. Look for Scoutmaster Jerry, he will be there early.
From the Llyod center we will move to the Rose Garden and assemble with the rest of the contingent.
We will then march in the Parade, at the conclusion of the parade we will hop on MAX and return to the Llyod center.
Parents.. after you drop your Scout off.. if you are planning of staying for the parade, there is a group of 720 parents watching at around 3rd and Burnside, there was plenty of room there last year.. right at the bridge.
UNIFORM for the PARADE:
Full Scout Uniform (Shorts or pants)
Troop hat... THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL.
NO JACKETS
NO BACKPACKS
fanny pack is ok with a water bottle in it.
SCOUT SOCKS
Good walking shoes

Please be on time we have to be at the Rose Garden at 9:30 AM staged and ready to walk.
Unless you have already made arrangements with Jerry, You are expected to be at the Parade. This is a high profile event and will promote Scouting, Jamboree, and the Council in a good light for years to come.
The weather is supposed to be fantasic.. lets have fun and show our pride at the Rose Parade.

Memorial Day Contingent Camp out

The 3-day All Contingent Campout (May 29-31), will provide the only opportunity for all the
Jamboree Troops to work together and provide a mini-Jamboree experience for the Scouts
and adult leaders. All Scouts are required to attend this event as part of your signing up to
attend the Jamboree.
Saturday morning we will meet at 6:30 AM at the Happy Valley elementary School, we will load up and head to Scouters Mountain. I will need a few parents to assist in shuttling scouts into the Camp Discovery area. The Scouts will then hike up to Cub world and set up their camp sites just as they
will at the National Jamboree. During the weekend each Troop will rotate through a variety
of stations where they will learn how to prepare for the Jamboree and what they can expect
to experience during the Jamboree and tour. Some of the stations will include tour information,
keeping yourself healthy, patch trading and much more.
Scouts will also get a chance to showcase their gateways and to see the other Troop’s gateways
as well. Parents and guests will also have a chance to visit and experience a small
sample of the Jamboree experience for themselves. Parents and guests are invited to visit
on Sunday, May 30th, starting at 7:00pm. This will allow you time to visit the Troop sites and
you are also invited to stay for the arena show which begins at 8:00pm on Sunday. Everyone
will be sitting in the field at Scouter’s Mountain so you will want to bring a blanket or
small pad to sit on. Parking is very limited so please plan on carpooling if you are planning
on visiting. Visitors are not permitted at any other time as this would interfere with the Jamboree
training.
The uniform for the weekend is the Full Field uniform (Jamboree) also known as the "Class A".
Troop Hat and Jacket are required. You may wear Scout pants for this event, but understand at Jamboree you will only be wearing scout shorts.
Pack everything in your issued duffle bag and red pack.
Parents please do not arrive early, the Jamboree committee staff will not allow you into the camp area.
There will be ample time to check out the camp site and see the evening show.
ALL SCOUTS NEED TO BRING A CAMP CHAIR (LAWN CHAIR). This is for the dining area as well as for the evening show.
PICK UP TIME ON MONDAY is 1:30 PM. Please pick up your Scout at Camp Discovery.

This is an option. We will not be doing this as a Troop or Contingent. If you would like to do this, it is up to you. I think it is a good program and may fit for your Scout. Again, it is only an option and not required nor a program our Troop will be doing as a unit.

What is the Smart Bracelet?
The Smart Bracelet is a water-resistant, disposable bracelet that acts as a secure account identifier for cashless purchases during the 2010 National Boy Scouts Jamboree. Your Scout can purchase snacks, beverages and supplies from the Trading Posts without the worry of misplaced cash or credit cards during the event.

How do I get a Smart Bracelet for my Scout?

Although breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the admission fee for Jamboree 2010, other snacks, beverages and personal items for purchase at the Trading Posts are not. All vendors at the Jamboree will accept your Scout’s Smart Bracelet for payment. These vendors include:

How do I add funds to my Scout’s Smart Bracelet? You can add funds to your Scout’s Smart Bracelet electronically on the FreedomPay Web site with either a credit/debit card or a bank account transfer. Funds are available immediately, and you can add funds as often as you like during the Jamboree. Additionally, FreedomPay offers an optional auto funding feature which will automatically add funds when your Scout’s Smart Bracelet balance reaches $10.

Jamboree Visitor Information

For those parents and friends that are planning on making a trip to Ft. A.P. Hill Virginia, here is some information that you may want or need to know about your Trip.
It is important to note that at no time while we are on the tour can your Scout leave the Troop to go with family and friends. Once the Scout leaves the custody of the Troop he is no longer allowed to return as a member of the contingent.
We will not be altering the tours or our itinerary to accommodate visitors.
Visitors will not be allowed in the Troops Hotel rooms.
Visitors may not ride on or occupy the Troops bus.
As stated below, visitors are allowed in the camp area, but will not be there during meal times and after posted visitor hours.
No visitors will be allowed in the camp area during the Arena shows, and may or may not be near the Troop during the arena show on Saturday the 31st. The Troop will be assembling and walking to the arena show with the contingent and sub camp. Chances are visitors will not be able to sit with the Troops just because of timing and space.
There will be no meals provided for visitors, retail options are available.
I would plan to spend a good amount of time getting into the Jamboree, the Army runs the gate and while they are aware of the Jamboree experience, they will not compromise security.
After we break camp, the Troop will be heading to a Hotel and finishing up tours and a trip to Busch Gardens. Again, you may have a great time at the park also, but your Scout will still be apart of the contingent and must stay with our group.
Look at these notes below... it important that you pay attention to meals, times, and what you can and can not do.
If you are planning on making the trip back to Virginia, please let me know just as a courtesy. Dates would be helpful also.

2010 National Scout Jamboree visitor information released

If you're planning to visit the 2010 National Scout Jamboree this summer, listen up. The BSA has just released details for visitors that will help make their jamboree experience memorable and stress-free.

Visiting the jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va., has been a favorite experience of Scouts and Scouters since 1981. And this year's "best, most exciting, fun-filled, safest jamboree ever" will certainly be no exception.

Here are some key points you need to know:

Visiting Hours

Monday, July 26: No visitors allowed
Tuesday, July 27: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, July 28: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Thursday, July 29: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday, July 30: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, July 31: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. (closing arena show)
Sunday, Aug. 1: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 2: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 3: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What Can Visitors Do?

A lot! Here are some of the options: the Army Adventure Center, Conservation area, Exhibits & Displays, 100th Anniversary Arena Show, Venturing, 2013 Jamboree display, Technology Quest, Brownsea Island, Disabilities Awareness, Amateur Radio as well as the Trading Posts, Scout Shop, and food outlets.

What Can't Visitors Do?

Some activities are reserved for participants only. These are: regional Action Centers and Stage Shows, all sub camp activities, Mysterium Compass, Boating, Scuba, Swimming, Snorkeling, Camp Thunder, Fishing and the Merit Badge Midway

Donations

A $10 requested donation per visitor per day will help cover the costs of visitor support, which includes grounds clean-up, restrooms, site restoration, amenities, and more. Jamboree visitors who donate will be named "Official Centennial Jamboree Supporters." Donations will be collected at the gate.

Groups

Vehicles carrying eight or more people can donate in advance. Get the Visitor Information Transmittal form from your local council, and send it to the national office in Texas. The designated group leader will receive a windshield placard that will make entering the jamboree quick and easy.

Food

Visitors will find plenty of retail food options, but visitors cannot eat in the troop sites or staff dining centers.

Accommodations

There is no on-site accommodation available for visitors. That includes RV sites, tent areas, and fixed housing.

Getting There

Check out the U.S. Army's official driving directions.

Getting Around

Be Prepared! There are no sidewalks, and most visitors will walk more than five miles per day at the jamboree.

Visiting on July 31

If you're planning to visit on Saturday, July 31, officials are suggesting that you arrive as early in the day as possible. Once Fort A.P. Hill reaches capacity for Saturday night's arena show, no more visitors will be allowed to enter the property.

All visitors will receive a special Visitor's Patch.

Troop 720 Camp out

In a post a few down (Scroll down) titled "90 Days" there is information about the camp out.
The only additional information is the pick up time on Sunday will be 12:00 noon at Camp Discovery.
So read the post "90 days" for the information on the Camp out this weekend.

The Gateway is complete. John (the SPL), Josh, Lucas, and their Volunteer Grand Dad have been working for about two and a half weeks on it and it looks great.
We set it up yesterday and will be setting it up at the camp out also, complete with fencing.

Health and Welfare at Jamboree

Here are some items that I got from the Sub camp staff document.
Some good information to think about now so we do not have problems in Virginia.

Foot care
The jamboree can be a miserable experience for anyone with sore or injured feet. Here are some ways that leaders can help prevent the occurrence of foot problems:
1. Make sure that everyone has the proper footwear. New shoes that are not broken in; shoes that fit too tightly or have wrinkled linings; and socks that are too tight, wrinkled, have holes, or are unclean should not be worn.
2. Include a check on foot conditions during your daily inspection, and send anyone to the subcamp medical center at the first sign of a blister or scratch.
3. Regularly instruct Scouts to bathe their feet daily, dry them thoroughly between the toes, keep toenails trimmed straight across, cover tender spots with adhesive or other dressing, and use foot powder.
4. Teach your Scouts to wear shoes at all times, except when they are in their tents or in the shower. A foot injury can ruin a jamboree experience.
Sunburn
Encourage Scouts to wear headgear and to use a sunscreen lotion with a sun protection factor rating of 15 or more on the face, ears, nose, knees, and backs of knees. Apply sunscreen two or three times a day. Report cases of sunburn to the subcamp medical center, and treat mild sunburn with an appropriate lotion or cream, obtainable from any of the jamboree trading posts.

Bedding
A good camper never lets a sleeping bag get wet. In the morning, as soon as he gets up, he hangs it outside to air, weather permitting. Before leaving camp for the day's activities, the sleeping bag is rolled and placed in a waterproof bag. It stays there until the camper is ready to go to bed. Protect bedding from ground moisture by using waterproof ground cloths.
Rest
Be sure to allow for daily rest periods and undisturbed sleep at night, since the jamboree program is an active one.
Bad weather
It is not unusual in the summer to have a thunderstorm or some other weather disturbance. When you have 10 days of camping, you should expect and prepare for inclement weather. Here are some ideas to help you prepare: First, expect to have some bad weather. Put the tent up correctly. Tent pegs should be driven to the proper depth. When you leave the campsite, close all flaps. Wind and rain can enter an open flap and cause damage. Keep your sleeping bag rolled in a waterproof bag or trash bag during the
day. If it starts to rain at night, put your sleeping bag inside a waterproof bag and crawl in. This should protect you from tent leaks.
When bad weather comes, help others. Make sure other tents are secure. If another troop's tents are down, offer to help repitch them.

Just a few things to think about... Pay particular attention to the Feet!!! They will be your ticket to a great time at Jambo!! Or not.

90 Days!!

In 90 days we will be on our way to the greatest event of our Scouting lives!!!
90 days... time sure is flying, and we still have a few things to wrap up, but we are well on our way.
Let me give you a quick update of whats going on.

First of all, the SPL and a few other guys from the troop along with a volunteer grandpa have completed the design for the gateway and have gathered all the materials. We will be putting it together on the May 8th camp out.
Next, we are still waiting on the rest of the patches.
As promised, here are some details regarding the camp out:
Regarding a Packing list.
All of the troop gear will be taken. Therefore no personal camping gear need be taken.
BRING:
Sleeping bag and pad
Wet weather gear
Headlamp or flash light
Tooth brush etc..
Pack your personal gear and clothing in your own backpack or duffle bag.
All Scouts will be wearing their full uniforms during the camp out. NO JEANS!
The uniform.. just as a reminders is;
"Official Boy Scouts of America" Shirt, Pant/shorts, Troop hat, Scout socks, green Troop jacket.
For this camp out bring some long johns for the evening to wear under your uniform.
We will meet at the Happy Valley Elementary School just down the hill from Scouters Mountain.
The Simple Directions to get there are:
Whether you come from Hillsboro or West Linn or points West of Gresham... You need to get on I 205 North or South.
Take the Sunnyside exit and head East.
At the top of the hill you will have a Safeway on the right at a major intersection.
That is 121st. Turn LEFT here.
Continue on 121st till you get to SE KING RD.
Turn RIGHT.
The School will be on your left about 7 blocks.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

Sunday April 11th- 1 PM till 7 PM, Troop set up day. This is mandatory! You must be at this event. There are a couple things going on during this Troop gathering.
First. All of the Troop gear is going to be set up, inventoried, marked, and checked by Patrol.
Second. Tent assignments are going to be made.
Third. Storage of the gear by Patrol.
Finally. This is another opportunity for Troop and Patrol bonding. We will be cooking a meal, doing some team building, and getting to know one another, this might be the most important part of the day.
If all goes well, and we get things done I think it would be a good idea to have our Monthly Troop meeting at this time also. The only catch will be that our Patches will be available on the 15th. We can discuss that further.

Thursday, April 15th- 7:00 PM Scheduled Troop meeting. We may just turn this into a Patch pick up night.

Saturday May 8th- Troop Camp out at Camp Discovery- This is Mandatory...Details forthcoming.
Thursday, May 20th- Troop Meeting
Saturday May 29th-31st - All Contingent Camp- THIS IS MANDATORY... Cancel all your plans, you need to be at this camp out.

We have a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time. Thanks for hanging in there and remaining patient throughout this process.. the pay off will be FANTASTIC at Jamboree!!

They will forever be known as the Lifesavers Patrol.
I think more to do with the candy than the act of saving lives.. but I am glad that they have come up with a name.

Troop Meetings

We are 4 months from Jamboree... it is very important that we have the whole Troop at Every meeting.
This Thursday we will be doing some team building games, working the Gateway plan, getting Patrol items planned and prepared (Flags, cheers, and yeah.. we still have a Patrol without a name).
We will be sizing everyone for their Jacket at the beginning of the meeting... DO NOT BE LATE.

Patch order Money is due this Thursday.
Any Med forms that are outstanding need to be turned in.
There will be an order form available for Troop Jackets, hats, and Tee Shirts.

There will be a committee/parent meeting in Room 6 over at the church classrooms, come to the Knights Hall and you can go over together after we get the jacket sizing complete.

'Boys’ Life Patrol Flag Contest
The Patrol Flag
Take a good look at a successful patrol, and what do you see? Its patrol flag—always honored, jealously guarded, properly cared for. It goes wherever the fellows go, on every hike, every camping trip. It flies from the top of the cliff they scaled, from the bow of the lead canoe. It’s their emblem, their calling card.
Contest Overview
The 2010 National Scout Jamboree program will feature the Boys’ Life Patrol Flag Contest. All jamboree patrols may enter. Each winning patrol flag (subcamp and region) will be presented a ribbon, and each winning patrol member will receive a special patch. All judging will be from within the subcamps and regional areas. On Saturday, July 31, 2010, a recognition ceremony will be held at 9:30 A.M. in the Boys’ Life exhibit area to honor the top three patrol flags from each region.
It is expected that every patrol will carry its patrol flag in a normal way throughout the jamboree. Subcamp patrol winners will receive a temporary patrol flag while the regional judging is being conducted.
To Enter the Contest
The patrol must construct its flag based on the jamboree patrol flag standards (see “Criteria for Judging”) prior to the jamboree, transport it to the jamboree, and present it for troop judging on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.
After the start of judging on July 28, no alterations or additions may be made to patrol flags; only the minor repairor maintenance of flags is permitted.
Procedure for Judging
• In the troop: July 28
The troop leaders (youth and adult) of each troop will select the winning entry from their troop on
Wednesday, July 28, 2010. All winning troop flags must be delivered to the subcamp headquarters by
10 A.M. Thursday, July 29, 2010, for subcamp judging.
• In the subcamp: July 29
The subcamp activities director and his elected staff will administer the Boys’ Life Patrol Flag Contest in each of the subcamps. Each subcamp will select three winning flags from their subcamp. Each winning patrol will be presented a ribbon for the flag, and each patrol member will receive a patch. Also, each patrol will receive a temporary patrol flag to carry while its winning flag is being judged at the regional level. The three winning sub camp flags are to be delivered to regional headquarters by 10 A.M. Friday, July 30, 2010.
• In the region: July 30
Three winning patrols will be chosen during the regional competition. Each winning patrol will be presented a ribbon for the flag, and each patrol member will receive a patch.
• At Boys’ Life Exhibits: July 31
All regional winning flags and patrol members are asked to be present at the Boys’ Life exhibit area at 9:30 A.M.
Saturday, July 31, 2010. Official photographs will be taken of each winning patrol and their flags. A brief recognition ceremony will follow the photo session.

Mail to the Jamboree
For efficient postal service to the jamboree, letters and packages must be addressed in this manner:

(Fill in participant’s full name)

All incoming mail will be handled through the regular camp-wide Jamboree Postal Service. Packages to
individuals will not be accepted on a collect (cash-on-delivery) basis; they must be sent prepaid to the jamboree.
Due to base security, packages sent by other carriers (i.e. UPS, FedEx, etc) will not be delivered to the subcamp by those carriers and will need to be X-rayed off site. Once cleared, those packages will be turned over to the Jamboree Postal Service for delivery. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use the U.S. Postal Service for packages.

Outgoing letters and packages can be mailed from an official U.S. Postal Service from the main post office located at Heth School House near Trading Post A or from one of the substations located at Trading Post B & C. U.S. Postal Service hours of operation are 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. For the return address on all mail or packages, each participant must use his home address. Otherwise, undelivered mail will be returned to the jamboree site long after participants have departed for home.

Don't forget to get your designs in for T-shirts, hats, and gateway.
We will have the jackets that we are going to order at our next Troop meeting so you can try them on before ordering them.

Recap of Committee/Parent meeting 2/28/10

I want to thank everyone for attending the committee/parent meeting tonight.
It was a very nice location, thanks to the West Linn folks for getting that all together for us.
The next committee/parent meeting will be during the Troop meeting on the 18th of March. We will be getting a class room at the St. Henry's Church to use while the Scouts are in their meeting at the Knights Hall.
In April we will have a Committee/parent meeting in Hillsboro.
Thanks again for coming.
Here are the major end items that we discussed and came to some conclusions about (there will be a full posting including the minutes of the meeting at a later date)

1. We concluded that there would be a net balance $1300 after the purchase of patches from the $50 assessment.
This money is going to be used for gifts, supplies, and materials for the Troop.
2. April 11th we will have a Troop gathering to assemble and set up the troop gear. This will be conducted at the Knights Hall Parking lot from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A meal will be included.
3. May 8th we are planning on the troop camping at Scouters Mountain.
4. Hats, Jackets, and T-shirts-
We have a vendor for all three. We found a great place in Estacada that will do our t-shirts for $7.50. We will get a price break at 100 shirts. We are still looking for a design, Scouts we need to your designs in quickly.
Jackets are going to be ordered through one of the other Jamboree Scoutmasters, she can get them for $11.99 a piece. I will talk with Kim at our next contingent meeting and get more details.
5. Supplies:
We need 2 more cookers for the Turkey stoves. There were hands that went up volunteering theirs, if you are interested, let me know.
Wood, we have one of the Dads that has all the wood that we need, we will be getting in touch with him with an itemized list of material needs.
We need to build 2 Patrol boxes and 4 stove tables.
One of the Scouts of the Troop has volunteered to take home, sand and repaint the tables. Thanks
Gateway. We are still working the design. Once we get a firm handle on that we will start talking about materials needed. The plan is to go light and easy. Stay tuned.
6. Gifts, we discussed how many we need and who they go for, above and beyond the "at home" gifts with the patches. We talked about gifts for bus drivers and tour guides etc. Karleen will bring 5 gifts to the next meeting and we will pick 2.

I am sure I am leaving something out. It was a very productive meeting, when the minutes come out, we will pass them on.

Med forms that have not yet been collected
Designs for t-shirt /gateway/ hat
There will be a T-shirt/Jacket order form available at the next Troop meeting.

It is imperative that Scouts make all the meetings, we have a lot to do and a short amount of time to do it.

Troop Update 2-10-10

OK Jamboree 720..
The Patch orders are in.. man, you guys ordered a lot of patches.. that's great, you will have a great time with that and our uniforms will look Great.
Medical forms are in, with a few exceptions... we will clean that up at the next Troop meeting.. which will be on February 18th at 7:00 PM at the Knights Hall.

I would like to thank EVERYONE.. Our Troop is 100% complete on the National Registration!!!
What that means is that now EVERYONE will have access to and receive all the National stuff coming out..
Look for a Catalog from National to hit your mail boxes soon.. they were supposed to be mailed on the 5th of February.. so look for it.

HATS, JACKETS, AND OTHER UNANSWERED QUESTIONS....
Hats.. we got the answer on Hats. The 4 of us have decided to have one made locally.. a baseball style. We will get the troops input.
We can keep the cost down this way and get what we want.
Jackets... I will talk about that one at the meeting.. lets just say for now that we have some options.
Unanswered questions... I have an itinerary of the trip.. it is still tentative, but it's about 85% accurate.. at least dates and locations are listed and we know what days we will be at the biggy's.

I want to thank everyone for their patients and support. The fun is really just beginning.
The next couple months are going to be busy and take a lot of work.. but it is all about the fun we are going to have at Jambo!!

Great Troop Meeting Last night

We had a great Troop meeting last night, it was good to see all of you again.
So here are some reminders.

We are really getting close and the excitement should really be building.. I know it is for me.
Medical forms are due at the January 21st meeting. I can not stress enough how important it is to get those in.
There are still 3 Scouts that are not registered at the National Site. You three will not be getting a physical form until you are registered. Sooooo.... get registered! Without your registration and physical you will not be going to Jamboree.

If you did not make it to the Swim check I need to talk with you at the meeting about getting it made up.
If you are interested in a Troop Leadership position, come to the meeting prepared to interview for the job. I am looking for a strong youth leader to be the Senior Patrol Leader. That could be You!

I regret to inform you that because of circumstances that are beyond Scouting Dave Kauth, our 1st Assistant had to step down from his duties. I will certainly miss him on the team. We will be welcoming Lou Loeb as the new 1st Assistant. He is a long time Scouter and has been on the Council Jamboree team from the beginning. He is excited about joining the Troop 720 team and I look forward to having him on the trip.

The Swim checks went well today. Helping us identify all of those great swimmers out there.. this opened a few more opportunities at Jamboree!
A couple notes:

The Next Troop meeting will be the Third Thursday of January (1-21-10)
ALL medical forms MUST be turned in at that meeting.
Patch order Forms are also due at the January meeting.
We will be selecting Youth leadership and conducting Youth Protection Training.

Here is what we are up to right now.
We have our Tax ID number and our account is being set up.
We are collecting our list of needs so we can have a better understanding of what our financial needs are.
The rest of the meetings will be meaningful and will require attendance of all of the Scouts in the Troop.

Let me say a few words about information flow, decision making, and Troop assignments.
First. If you are not receiving information I need to know. We try to put out information as it comes to us. We try to keep it all relevant and timely.
Second. Decisions at the Troop level are currently being made by myself, Dave, Rob, and Adam. We have all been trained and understand what we need to do to get this Troop to Jamboree. I would ask for patients and understanding when it comes to the decisions we make.
Finally. Troop assignments. We have no control as to how Scouts are assigned to Troops.. that is at least one level above me. I have done and will continue to work with and lobby for individual Scouts to be placed where positions are available. I understand that this is frustrating. I am as frustrated at times with the process too... but understand that the big picture is opportunities for every registered Scout to attend Jamboree and have a wonderful experience.
I have been asked many questions as to how and why things have happened and to be 100% honest with all of you, I do not have all the answers.
I have been asked when the latest date a Scout can drop is. And again.. to be 100% honest with you.. I am not going to answer that. First and foremost.. the frustration of a parent should not take away from the experience of the Scout. In this regard I again beg for patients and allow for the system to work. In the end I am sure it will work out favorably for all.
I am a firm believer that as a parent and Scoutmaster it is my job to make dreams come true. This is a monumental task and at the end of the day sometimes we fall a little short.. but never because we did not try. As a Dad.. I will never give up on anything that my kids value.
Our Council committee chair has stated that we are going to Jamboree with 13 Troops. That allows for 468 Scouts from the Cascade Pacific Council the opportunity to attend the very best Boy Scouting has.. the National Jamboree celebrating the Boy Scouts of America's 100 years. I assure you that no matter which troop a Scout ends up in the experience will be fantastic.
Do I want them all in my Troop? YES I do.. I believe that Troop 720 will have the best time of all... But all 13 Troops need to be filled and if that means changes needed to be made, I am sure they were made with the very best of intentions.
Let's ride this out and see what happens, especially in the early months of the year. My feeling is that as we enter 2010 the road to Jambo will become more clear and less confusing.

It is my pleasure to serve as the Scoutmaster for Jamboree Troop 720 and my commitment is to make all of our Jamboree Dreams come true!

Swim Checks!!!

This Saturday (5 December 2009) is Troop 720's Swim Check for Jamboree. This is a real important event as it will set up planning (Buddy tags and activities) that we will be able to participate in.

We will have a short meeting following the Swim checks.. but be prepared, we may hold our meeting while Troop 719 is conducting theirs.. so please be on time if possible.

PATCH ORDERS

Patch order forms are due at the JANUARY Troop meeting. The orders will go in right after we turn the forms in to the Council Jamboree staff for a rather quick turn around.
We will receive the patches on the 12th of April and distribute them at the April Troop meeting on the 15th.
Some things you MUST consider. Once the order is placed there will be no more. So order what you want now. Consider the patches for your uniform, for your own collection, and for trading when placing your order. Like the Jamboree.. this is a once in a life time deal. Once we place the orders, the council will not be ordering anymore.
So please do not hesitate on this. Have the discussion early. We will need to turn the forms in as a unit. So get your completed form to our Patch coordinator, she will then get them to me to turn in.
We only get to turn in 41 forms (36 Scouts, 4 leaders, and 1 extra for "Troop Needs").
Payment will be to the Troop, and the Troop will send 1 check for the total to the Council.
Stand by for details on this. We still need to have the discussion on were our money is going.

Became a Cub Scout in Arlington, Virginia and Earned the Arrow of Light.
Crossed over to Boy Scouts with Troop 100, Charlemange District, Transatlantic Council in Brunssum, Holland. I moved to Louisiana in the 9th Grade and joined Troop 243 in the Calcasieu Area Council. I earned my Life Scout rank and then fell into every Scoutmasters nightmare of Girls, Gas, and Goofin' off.
After High School, I joined the US Army and spent 21 years serving our Country. I retired from the Army in 2005.
I have Backpacked on 3 different continents and spent countless nights under the stars.
I have been with Scouting for 20 years and love the program immensely.
I am married to my wife of 17 years and we have three awesome children, all with their own talents and treasures. My two sons are both Life Scouts and are in Troop 720 for the adventure of a life time.
I am the Scoutmaster of Troop 664 in Gresham and have been for 5 years. It is with out a doubt the most rewarding job I have ever had in my life.
I look forward to spending this adventure with all of the members of 720 and their families. This will truly be an event that will in some way change our lives.
Thank all of you for your support, both Scouts and Parents alike. This is going to be a fantastic journey, glad we get to do it together.

News from the National Bulletin

Here are a couple note worthy items from the National Jamboree Bulletin:

Recycling:
One goal of the 2010 jamboree is to be the “greenest” jamboree to date.
Our refuse contractor has developed a waste removal and recycling program for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. Each subcamp will have distinct containers for waste material and recycling of specific materials. Each container will be clearly marked, identifying the materials that should go inside.
The proceeds from these transactions will be utilized to offset the expense of hauling and disposing of non-recyclable materials.
Non-recyclable trash will be bagged and collected in a marked subcamp container that will be emptied regularly by our refuse company and disposed of at a landfill.
Dishwater and wet kitchen waste should be collected in pails and taken to the nearest grinding station for appropriate disposal by subcamp maintenance/environmental personnel. Scouts are required to do the same. Food waste recycling is being explored; guidelines and containers for this type of recycling would be made clear.

World Friendship Fund:
A Good Turn opportunity for jamboree participants will be provided at breakfast on Thursday, July 29, 2010. At this time, a collection will be taken for the World Friendship Fund. The purpose is to make Scouts and Scouters aware of how the fund helps Scouts around the world and to give them a chance to contribute to world Scouting endeavors.

Scout Visitors to the Jamboree: (This would apply to visiting family also)
Jamboree activities are made possible by the event fees paid by participating Scouts and leaders. To ensure all paying Scouts get ample opportunity to participate in all of the jamboree activities, visiting Scouts will not be allowed to participate in events and activities at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. Participation in the activities at the action centers (action alley, air rifle, archery, bikathon, buckskin games, confidence course, motocross, pioneering, rappelling, and trapshooting) by members of visiting units will not be allowed. Other areas reserved for paid jamboree participants are the outback centers (conservation, fishing, and aquatics), mountain boarding, and the Order of the Arrow’s THE MYSTERIUM COMPASS. Visitors will not be able to work on merit badge requirements at the Merit Badge Midway. Visitors are allowed to watch the action, tour the various activity sites, and purchase food and awesome souvenirs at the trading posts.

Medical Forms

At the All contingent meeting there was some question about medical forms.
If you have not received your medical forms;
1. Have you registered at the National site ?
2. Have you checked your junk mail box, it could be hiding in there.
3. If you have done the above and still nothing. Email to jamboree.medical@scouting.org
Have your registration number (that you got from National) in the email, this speeds up the process.
Once you receive the email print it. You will not be able to save the data that you fill out. Hand written forms are fine. The form will come with all of the information filled out that they get from the Registration.
If you continue to have issues with your medical form.. let me know ASAP. Once I get on it, we can work for resolution.

All Contingent Meeting Wrap Up

Thank you to everyone for being at the All contingent meeting. I hope you found the information plentiful and helpful.
I appreciate your patients while at the meeting, I know that it was a long day for all of us, but in the end it was nice to meet those we had not met before and get a feel for the huge undertaking that is the National Jamboree.
From where I sat, I thought I would discuss some of the most asked questions.
First on Uniform. Old or New.. wear what you have, but wear it all properly.
Hats and Jackets. Don't worry about that right now. I will let the Troop know as soon as I know.
Patches. Give the patches some thought when ordering.
Some thoughts on patches. Patches and Patch trading is a fun part of the Jamboree experience, but there is so much to do at Jambo, I would hate for a Scout to come home with nothing but patch trading memories.
Patches for collecting and trading are fun and not that expensive. Talk with your scout and do what you think is reasonable.
Information. If you are not getting emails and other contacts, please let me know. It is important to all of us that you receive timely information and information that is relevant and important to you.

Reminder - CPC All Contingent Meeting

This Saturday, November 7th, from 9am to 4:30pm is the first official 2010 National Jamboree meeting. The entire Cascade Pacific Council contingent (Scouts, Parents and Leaders) will be meeting to kick off our adventure. This is a mandatory meeting, so please make sure you are on time and plan to spend the day. Bring your lunch since there will not be time to leave the site to pick something up.

The meeting will be held at the New Beginnings Christian Center at 3300 NE 172nd Place - NE 172 and Sandy [I-84 to exit 13 (181st), North on 181st to Sandy, West on Sandy to 172nd]. When you arrive, look for Troop 720 (there should be signs and the Troop leaders will be there) to sign-in and receive your information packet.

Looking forward to seeing everybody this Saturday.

Dinner Plans for 2010 National Jamboree

Just got this from the Cracker Barrel Blog (Scouting Magazine's Blog):

Dinners at the jamboree have always been tasty, but they're about to get a whole lot better. Bring on the theme nights!

At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree next year, organizers have planned eight different theme nights for participating troops. The themes are:

July 26: Western
July 27: Tex-Mex
July 28: Mardi Gras
July 29: Iron Chef (patrols will create a dinner from secret ingredients)
July 30: All-American
July 31: Arena show (patrols will carry no-cook meals to the arena)
Aug. 1: Asian
Aug. 2: Dinner Impossible (adults cook for the Scouts)
Aug. 3: Chicago
It's clear that boys and adult volunteers won't go hungry at this year's jamboree.

OCTOBER LEADER MEETING NOTES

Hey Troop 720,
I thought we should share some information from the Contingent Leader Meeting.
Here is the latest and greatest news on UNIFORMS:
First, wear what you have. If you have old uniforms wear them completely (with the New Boy Scout Green tabs). If you have the New Centennial Uniform, wear it completely.
DO NOT MIX and MATCH. Old pants can not be worn with New shirts etc.
The Jamboree committee is requiring that every Scout have 2 Complete sets of uniforms. I would suggest 3 complete sets. But 2 is the minimum.
THINGS NOT TO WORRY ABOUT AT THIS TIME.. in other words.. don't spend money on the following items:
Hats, it is still yet to be determined which hat we are going to wear.
Jackets, we will be wearing the "Official BSA Wind breaker style" jacket. It is currently red, but it is supposed to be changing to Green. We are waiting to see which one we will be wearing... so just wait on this.

It was suggested, and I think it is a fantastic idea, that if you or family members were or are planning on buying uniform items as Christmas gifts etc... to get Scout Shop gift cards instead. That way, when we do get the final word.. you can purchase the right stuff.

MEDICAL FORMS and NATIONAL REGISTRATION.
You all are doing a great job of getting this done. There are still a handful of youth that are not registered with National. Please get this completed in the next week or so. Your medical form is generated from this registration.
ONCE you get the Medical form, please get the physical completed. The physicals all need to be turned in No later than FEBRUARY 1st to the Scoutmaster. I have got to get them into Council in February and they need to be checked.

ALL CONTINGENT MEETING
Don't forget, we have the mandatory All contingent meeting on November 7th. We ask that every one check in at 9:00 AM. Look for our Troop and check in there. One of the Troop leaders from 720 will be there to check you in. So just look for us. We will all be sitting together and will be together all day.
Be sure to be in your FULL Scout uniform on the 7th. Bring your lunch too.

PATCHES
We got to see all the patches tonight at the meeting. They look fantastic!!! You all will be getting an order form at the All Contingent meeting!

FUNDRAISING ALL NIGHT GAME PARTY
November 20th there will be an all night "lock in" fundraiser. I will give more information about this at the All contingent meeting.

I am soooooo pumped up to go to Jamboree!!! I am glad to have all of you in our Troop and promise you the best time you have ever had in Scouting!!!

First Troop gathering

Thanks to everyone that showed up for the first Troop 720 gathering! It was great to meet all of you.
Like I said.. we are in for one cool adventure. I look forward to getting to know all of you and becoming life long friends.
This adventure will be one that we will all have to share for the rest of our lives.

A couple reminders from today's super long talk..
Please complete the online National registration. You can do that here .
Once that is done, and they email you the medical form. See your Doctor and turn in the Med form to me.
November 7th is the All contingent meeting. It is mandatory. Look for me and the Assistants. We will be together all day for that. Don't forget to bring your lunch.

First Troop Gathering

TROOP 720 will be holding its first Troop gathering on OCTOBER 4th, 2009 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Gresham. The Gathering will start at 1:00 PM and last about an hour and half to two hours.
The Address to the hall is:
233 NW 1st St. Gresham, OR 97030.
At this meeting we will be getting to know one another and presenting a lot of information about where we are on the journey of a life time.
We will have plenty of time to answer any questions that you may have.
We would love to see all of the Scouts that are assigned to Troop 720 at the gathering along with their parents.
We look forward to meeting all of you and taking this next step closer to Virginia and the National Jamboree.

Popcorn Fundraising Opportunity for Jamboree Scouts!
Any Scout signed up to attend the 2010 National Jamboree can receive an additional 15% commission on their fall popcorn sale.
To qualify, Jamboree Scouts must do the following:
1. Notify the council of your intent to sell popcorn. Please send an e-mail to jarvis@cpcbsa.org or give Dave Jarvis a call at 503-225-5721
2. Participate in the fall 2009 Popcorn Sale.
3. At the conclusion of the sale you must send to Dave Jarvis the following.
A. A record of your sales for the 2009 Popcorn Sale

B. Complete the “Jamboree Popcorn Sale Commission Bonus” information sheet. (this form will be sent to you after you declare your intent to participate)

The 15% bonus commission will apply to the sales in the Show-N-Sell, Take Order and Online Popcorn, sales programs.
If your troop is not selling popcorn this year, individual Jamboree Scouts can still participate. Please contact me so we can get you set up.
It is the hope of the council that this will give Scouts attending Jamboree a better chance at raising the funds required to attend this once-in-a-lifetime Scouting experience.

National Applications

Please, if you have not already done so visit the National Website and fill out the National Jamboree application. You all should have received a letter with instructions to do so and how to do it. This needs to be done as soon as possible. There are many Jamboree functions that count on this application being completed.

The new Jamboree medical forms will be sent to the individual Scouts. These forms will be generated from the application.

Once your application is completed you must turn it in to one of the Scout leaders from the Jamboree Troop.

We need to turn it in the council for you.

So whats with the Light house and the First Aid merit Badge?

Well... this year the Jamboree committee looked at the themes of Jamboree and came up with Advancement and Landmarks. These will appear on our JSP (Jamboree Shoulder Patch). Our Troop will wear the Cape Meres Lighthouse, on the patch will appear the First Aid Merit Badge.

Troop 720 is in one of three groups. The Groups that make up the contingent. The border of our patch will be Red signifying the group we are in. The red border Troops represent "Service".

The picture attached to this post is a draft of what our JSP will look like.

We will talk more about patches and how we will be getting them soon.
